Seedlings - Y1

Welcome to Y1 Seedlings

Teacher: Miss Barnes                     Teaching Assistants: Miss Almey & Miss Halford

Seedlings class are caring, kind and curious learners who always go above and beyond and work hard to achieve amazing things! Our classroom is calm and curious and we love to take our learning outside. In our class we are taught all subjects and throughout the year learn the skills and knowledge to become: mathematicians, artists, readers, writers, scientists, musicians, geographers and historians!

The class is taught by Miss Barnes and supported by Miss Almey and Miss Halford.

What Are We Learning?

Below you can find an overview of our learning for the whole year and also more detail for each term and the sequence which we follow to help build our knowledge in each subject.

We use our Knowledge Organisers which are specific to our learning topic and help us identify key information, that we need to know and remember.

Autumn Term 1 Learning

In the first half term of the Year 1, Seedlings will be transitioning from Reception to KS1 learning. This will be through a balance of adult led teaching and activities, and child led continuous provision which we call "Discovery Learning", where the children can independently access and choose from a range of resources to support their own learning. Most of our learning is driven by science and the theme, ‘The Big Build’ – learning about which materials the most suitable to build a strong house. We will read the Three Little Pigs and think about which materials would be best to make strong houses. In Geography we will be exploring our school and local area.

Autumn Term 2 Learning

In the second half of the Autumn term, our main curriculum driver is History and we will be exploring how toys have changed overtime and how different our toys are in comparison to the toys our Grandparents played with. We will look at real artefacts and learn how to write and read questions for a special visitor!

Spring Term 1 Learning

In the first half of Spring term, our learning is driven by Science and we learn all about animals, including humans. We learn how to identify and sort animals into the correct group and research what different animals eat. We also learn body parts and how important our five senses are to survive!

Spring Term 2 Learning

In the second half of Spring term, most of our learning is driven by Science and the theme, ‘The Potting Shed.’ This is really exciting because we take our learning outside and learn about planting! We learn how to plant seeds, name flowers and wild plants, and observe how different plants grow over the weeks.

Summer Term 1 Learning

In the first half of Summer term, most of our learning is driven by Geography and the theme, ‘World Traveller.' We learn about the seven continents and name the five oceans. We've already learnt about where we live in the world so exploring other places and comparing hot and cold places is a great opportunity to see what happens in the world around us.

Summer 2 Learning

In the second half of Summer term, most of our learning is driven by History and the theme, ‘To the Rescue.’ This is such an exciting topic as we focus on the history of the RNLI, lifeboat and sea safety and learn about Cornish inventor, Henry Trengrouse. We have a special visit from the RNLI and are visiting The Maritime Museum to complete workshops about sea safety.

Supporting your child at home

Please make sure you read every day at home. The children will have a book wallet containing their reading diary and books - please ensure that all their books stay in the wallet and are brought in every day. Every Monday, they will take home a library book that they have chosen and 'book bag book'.  The 'book bag book' is linked to the text your child will be reading in school and they should be able to read it to you. On Wednesday, they will then bring home the book that they have been reading in school during phonics lessons. They should be confident reading this book already. Please sign their reading diary to show when they have read with you, and you can write a brief comment if you like.

Listen to your child read out loud to develop their fluency as they rehearse the same story. The phonics books are phonetically decodable books which links to the sounds they cover throughout the week. Please practice the red words in the book and discuss the questions for comprehension in the back of the book. The children will keep the same books for the week to enable them to reread the book, building their speed, fluency and expression.

Please ensure all books and your child's reading diary comes into school every day to enable staff to read with and support your child.
